NIC – Network Interface Card
Network Interface Card is a harware device inserted on the motherboard of a computer system, that allows computer system to connect to a network. It is also known as an Ethernet card or a network adapter. These cards are ideal to use for ethernet networks with speed of 10, 100 or even 1000 Mbps. A typical 100 Base-T card provides a speed of 100 Mbps.
Most NICs are designed for a particular type of network, protocol, and media. Computer systems on a local area network (LAN) typically connected with the help of Network Interface Card specifically designed for the LAN transmission technology, such as Ethernet or token ring.
