SPG – Special Protection Group
The Special Protection Group (विशेष सुरक्षा दल, in Hindi) is the first line of defense that guards the Prime Minister of India and the former Prime minister and their immediate family members. It also handles security of other International and domestic VIPs.
The SPG was created on 8 April 1985 after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984. The force was set up specially to guard the Prime Minister and its family members so that no such incident should happen in the future.
The recruitment in the SPG is carried out from the Central Armed Police Forces & Railway Protection Force (RPF).
